As summer slowly comes to an end, it's time to relax, unwind, and focus on yourself. The best way we know how to relax is by sitting by the pool, in our favorite bikini, with a book in our hand, as we soak up the sun. Here are some of our favorite summer reads you must dive into before the summer is over.
Northern California, during the violent end of the 1960s. At the start of summer, a lonely and thoughtful teenager, Evie Boyd, sees a group of girls in the park, and is immediately caught by their freedom, their careless dress, their dangerous aura of abandon. Soon, Evie is in thrall to Suzanne, a mesmerizing older girl, and is drawn into the circle of a soon-to-be infamous cult and the man who is its charismatic leader. Hidden in the hills, their sprawling ranch is eerie and run down, but to Evie, it is exotic, thrilling, charged—a place where she feels desperate to be accepted. As she spends more time away from her mother and the rhythms of her daily life, and as her obsession with Suzanne intensifies, Evie does not realize she is coming closer and closer to unthinkable violence, and to that moment in a girl’s life when everything can go horribly wrong.
What happens to cool kids when they grow up? That is the question Emma Straub poses in this slice of post-hipster Brooklyn life. Elizabeth, Andrew, Lydia, and Zoe were the cool kids back in college in the ’90s—and they had the angsty alternative band to prove it. Now, though, Elizabeth and Andrew are married with a teen son, Harry, and Zoe is married with a teen daughter, Ruby. After buying out the other band members, Lydia rocketed to fame on one of the band’s tracks before her sudden rockstar’s death. When some Hollywood-types appear wanting the remaining band members to sign off on a movie made about Lydia’s rise and fall, old tensions resurface among the trio. As teenagers do, Harry and Ruby manage to get themselves into trouble while their parents are reliving and rehashing their own youthful dramas. Modern Lovers has its finger squarely on the pulse of Gen X’s coming of age, and Millennials attempts to make their own mark on the world.
Ezekiel “Easy” Rawlins finds his life in transition. He’s ready—finally—to propose to his girlfriend, Bonnie Shay, and start a life together. And he’s taken the money he got from the Rose Gold case and, together with two partners, Saul Lynx and Tinsford “Whisper” Natly, has started a new detective agency. But, inevitably, a case gets in the way: Easy’s friend Mouse introduces him to Rufus Tyler, a very old man everyone calls Charcoal Joe. Joe’s friend’s son, Seymour (young, bright, top of his class in physics at Stanford), has been arrested and charged with the murder of a white man from Redondo Beach. Joe tells Easy he will pay and pay well to see this young man exonerated, but seeing as how Seymour literally was found standing over the man’s dead body at his cabin home, and considering the racially charged motives seemingly behind the murder, that might prove to be a tall order.
Picnic in Provence: A Memoir with Recipes

When Breath Becomes Air
At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. And just like that, the future he and his wife had imagined evaporated. When Breath Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi’s transformation from a naïve medical student “possessed,” as he wrote, “by the question of what, given that all organisms die, makes a virtuous and meaningful life” into a neurosurgeon at Stanford working in the brain, the most critical place for human identity, and finally into a patient and new father confronting his own mortality.
What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when the future, no longer a ladder toward your goals in life, flattens out into a perpetual present? What does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? These are some of the questions Kalanithi wrestles with in this profoundly moving, exquisitely observed memoir.
We love our home in the sunny city of Miami, Florida. Whether you're lucky enough to live in Miami or are just looking to visit Miami, this city has so much to offer from its exciting foods, to art districts , to beautiful beaches... Miami has it all. We could not imagine a more perfect place. If you live here, we know you're constantly looking for new places to explore and if your visiting we have the inside scoop on cool things to do. Here’s a list of 5 things we love to do in Miami.
If you think of art in Miami, it’s hard not to think of street art. Miami is a vibrant city filled with young, up and coming trends, and the Wynwood Walls are a perfect example. Wynwood was once a warehouse district until 2009 when Tony Goldman decided to transform Wynwood to the huge graffiti street art display but also a center where people can shop, get a bite to eat, or go for drinks. You’ve probably seen thousands of pictures of these elaborate graffiti walls but in person Wynwood is breathtaking. It's impossible not to fall inlove with the laid back vibe of Wynwood. By day you can grab a a pressed juice or acai bowl at Jugo Fresh and bask in the sunshine while strolling through gorgeous art. If you're into shopping you are bound to find your new favorite boutique in Wynwood. Wynwood stays alive even when the sun goes down, by night you can hangout at taverns and brickhouse filled with cool art and amazing vibes.
Is it possible to turn down tacos? We don’t think so. Bodega Taqueria is one of the best Tacos spots in Miami. This cute little taco shop is has a unique taco truck interior. This taco shop is open till 5 AM making it the perfect place to get a midnight snack. Not only are these tacos extremely delicious but the unique thing is that at Bodega there’s a secret bar. To get to this bar you have to go through a porta potty, doesn't sound too glamorous but think of it as the portal to Narnia. The hidden bar is a perfect place to hangout and grab drinks. After a long night of at the bar you’re gonna want to grab tacos at Bodega.
Tan Topless in South Beach
The iconic South Beach...South Beach is basically the face of Miami. Every year thousands of people travel thousands of miles to visit the famous South Beach. The super easily going vibe of South Beach allows you to lay back and relax. If you love tanning South Beach is the perfect spot, all over South Beach, you can tan topless with no worries, but there are some areas of South Beach where tanning topless is more prominent. So grab your towel, you tanning lotion and head over to south beach!
Sunday Farmers Market
Sunday’s call for brunch and farmers markets. When you think of Lincoln road you probably think of a glamorous shopping strip, but there’s much more to Lincoln than just that. Every Sunday Lincoln turns into a green market from 9 a.m to 6:30 p.m. This green market is the perfect place for you to take a sunday stroll while you stock up on produce for the week. You can buy everything from locally grown organic fruits and vegetables to bread and honey to ceviche and guacamole to fresh fruit smoothies at Lincoln Road's Farmer Market. Get your baskets ready, we hope to see you there next Sunday!
Knaus Berry Farm
Knaus Berry Farm is an old fashioned strawberry farm that you absolutely have to visit. You’ll be able to pick some of the best tasting strawberries in South Florida. One of Knaus’s main attractions is their homemaid cinnabon, people line up for hours for these cinnabons. The cinnabons are so delicious that anyone who has ever had them knows they are worth the wait. Once you try one of these cinnabons, you’ll be coming back for more.
What are you waiting for? Its time you take advantage of all the amazing things Miami has to offer!
With the summer season comes the inevitable sunburn. The first thing we do when summer hits is throw on a bikini. It’s super easy to spend hours in the sun and not realize that we are getting burned until we feel the pain later that day. We all have those long summer beach days that leave us with a killer burn. When this happens you don't have to suffer in silence. There are several actions you can take to soothe your sunburn until it heals. Hopefully when the sunburn heals it will turn into a rocking tan. Here are six simple tips for soothing a sunburn:
One of the simplest ways to soothe a sunburn is to take a dose of aspirin. We all have a stash of aspirin in our medicine cabinets. When you have a sunburn your skin has become inflamed. Aspirin can treat the inflammation and take away the pain until the sunburn fully heals. For aspirin to work in this instance, you must take it as soon as you realize you have a sunburn.
Cortisone cream is another easy way to soothe a sunburn. However, you will need to obtain a cortisone prescription from your doctor in order to be able to use this method. It must be used no later than six hours after the burn first develops. Keep in mind that there are some parts of your body where cortisone cream cannot be used.
Aloe Vera gel is also effective in soothing a sunburn. Just like aspirin, it will treat the inflammation of your skin. When purchasing Aloe Vera gel it is important to ensure that you don't choose one that contains Lidocaine or other similar ingredients. Lidocaine can worsen a sunburn rather than treating it. You can be allergic to Lidocaine which would cause you to suffer an allergic reaction that will do even more damage to your skin than the sunburn.
Cucumbers are a great tool for easing the pain of a sunburn. Slicing cold cucumbers can be beneficial when treating sunburn because you can blend the slices together to create a paste that will cool down your skin as well as treat the inflammation. When using a paste or gel that is cool to the touch you will be helping yourself to recover from your sunburn faster. The reason for this is that it restricts the capillaries in your skin, which stops the pain. No wonder cucumbers are commonly used for skin relaxation.
Ice can also be used to cure a sunburn. However, do not make the mistake of placing the ice directly onto your skin. The best method is to fill an ice pack, put a thin towel over the burn and place the ice pack on top of the towel. Gently cooling off your skin using the ice is a safe and common way to treat a sunburn. There’s no doubt that ice will cool your burning skin down.
Though most people take a hot shower everyday, this is something that should be avoided when you have a sunburn. While the coldness of ice helps soothe a burn, hot water can make it worse. The inflammation is increased when the hot water opens up the capillaries in the skin. The best course of action when nursing a sunburn is to limit yourself to baths and showers using cool water. The cool water will make your skin feel better in no time.
These simple tips will go a long way in helping you soothe any sunburn. Many people try several of these options for healing sunburns before they find the one that best suits them. Go ahead and try them all, these methods are fast-acting so you can get back in the sun in no time
Being "Green" doesn't have to be hard. As a matter of fact, choosing more environmentally friendly alternatives will often make your life easier, and help you save money!
1. Skip The Sink
Studies have shown dishwashers use half the energy, one-sixth of the water, and less soap than hand-washing dishes. According to the EPA, completely replacing hand washing dishes can save 100 pounds of carbon dioxide and $40 per year. On top of the environmental benefits, you can just sit back and relax while the dish washer is running. Also, who would want dry skin from constantly washing dishes?
2. Put Down The Blow Dryer
Reducing drying time by just 5 minutes a day saves almost 45 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year. What's even better is that you are saving the environment and your hair at the same time! High heat can damage the cells in your hair’s cuticle, causing strands to snap and break so your hair loses its luster. You'll never know what kind of compliments you'll get rocking your nature hair if you never try!
3. Download The Seafood Watch App
Seafood is a healthy and delicious alternative to meat or poultry. However, many traditionally abundant fish populations have become endangered or threatened due to overfishing. The Seafood Watch app tells you which fish are plentiful and which are on the brink of extinction. This app will help you be more mindful of the other ecosystems we coexist with and allow you to eat your favorite seafood guilt free. It also contains a handy sushi guide to help you make safer raw-fish decisions in a snap.
4. Flaunt Your Reusable Bags
Americans use over 100 billion plastic bags each year! Which is around 350 per person. Manufacturing plastic bags causes a lot of atmospheric pollution and they are extremely dangerous for wildlife. A single plastic bag will take over 1,000 years to degrade, which means that it will occupy a lot of landfill space and keep floating in the ocean until a creature accidentally tries to eat it. Currently, they are accountable for killing over 100,000 sea turtle annually, many which are already endangered. Reusable bags are not only more environmentally friendly, but they are actually more durable and will not rip and tear like plastic bags. They are also much easier to carry and can be a fashionable accessory.
5. Topless Beverages
Americans use over 1.5 billion plastic lids a year just for coffee consumption. Saying no to the lid for your beverages will help drastically reduce the amount of plastic waste we contribute. Also, if there's no lid there's no need for a straw! Straws are most often made out of plastic and also contribute to landfills and cO2 emissions. Sipping through straws also creates a pursing movement for your lips which increase your chances of getting wrinkles!
6. Say "No" To Receipts
Let's be honest, who actually looks at their receipts from the grocery store or the gas station? Those small pieces of paper are inconvenient to store and most of the time just end up in the trash can anyways. By saying no to receipts, more paper and trees will be saved. Which will decrease cO2 levels and make our air cleaner.
