 Where do you live?

I was born and raised in Canada but moved to the states when I was 21. After moving around both Florida and California, I currently call Miami home!!

How did you first get involved in the fitness industry?

I grew up as an athlete and played every sport available all the way to high school. I also grew up with a dream to be a fitness role model and inspiration like the women on the covers of the fitness magazines. There was one big problem, which was my lack of knowledge for nutrition.. I was ignorant and naive to the impact a healthy diet has on your body. I would just eat and eat whatever I wanted which was ok when I was younger but it caught up to me in my late teens/early 20’s. Then everything changed in one moment when I saw a photo of me where I barely recognized myself. I was ashamed that I had gotten that big, so I immediately decided that I had enough and took action. From that moment I got to work on becoming the strong, inspirational and fit woman I always wanted and knew I could be.

It took me 3 years but I lost close to 50 lbs by teaching myself everything and training hard. It became my passion to inspire other women to take action in their own life too. That’s when I became a certified personal trainer, fitness model and bikini competitor (Fitness Universe Pageant). 
So my passion for the fitness industry was born out of my own pain and desire to take action and transform my life. I love to share my story to inspire women and prove that they can do it too!

What's an advice you can give to women who are trying to lose weight?

I look at this a step by step approach. First, be honest with yourself and confront the fact that you need and want to change. Being in denial will get you absolutely nowhere. (That was me for years until I saw that photo that changed it all).
Second, find your why. This is a deep question that no one can answer but you. Why do you want to lose weight or get in shape? There’s no wrong answer. Maybe it’s because you want to be a positive role model for your kids.. Maybe you need more energy. Maybe you have a reunion coming up. Whatever it is, find your why and let THAT be your driving force. Write it down and focus on it. Times will get tough and temptations will be everywhere but if you know your why, nothing will stop you. 

 

Thirdly, set your goals. They have to be specific with a deadline. How many lbs do you want to lose by what date? The more specific, the better! 

Lastly, take action!! No more waiting for the perfect time. It’s time get started now!! I’m big on taking action! You can dream and think and plan all day long but without action, nothing will happen. Time to get to work on creating those changes! 

What is your personal fitness routine in an average week?

I love lifting weights in the gym! It makes me feel so strong and empowered. I have a
weight lifting routine that I do 5 Days a week. Then I’ll throw in some cardio too. For cardio, my favorite is treadmill or stair sprints!! 

What advice do you give to people just starting to exercise or who haven't exercised in a long time?

My advice is to find an exercise that you enjoy and look forward to going to! Otherwise, you won’t stick to it! There are SO many ways to exercise. Find something that gets you excited, such a spinning class, boot camps, CrossFit or a simple morning walk! Also, when you’re a beginner, you need to ease your way into it so you don’t 
over do it! Fitness is a journey not a quick fix, so take things slow! 

If someone has just 20 minutes a day to exercise, what should they focus on?

Without a 
doubt , high intensity interval training (HIIT). This is a type of workout that alternates between bursts of activity and fixed periods of less-intense activity. This will keep your heart rate up and burn more fat in less time. For example, sprinting for 30 seconds, walking for 1 min. Very effective!! 

 

How do you stay motivated throughout the year to stick to your fitness routine?
I don’t believe in motivation or willpower. I don’t believe anyone is always motivated to do exactly what they need to do to get results. This goes back to when I mentioned my ‘why’ or my vision. I have a very strong vision of exactly who and what I want to be in this world.
That vision is what drives me to stay focused and take action. Also, I am way more confident and happy when I am fit and strong. I don’t feel good when I’m sluggish and have extra weight to lose. I never want to go back to the Taryn that felt trapped in a body that I was not proud of.

What is your all time favorite exercise?
Any type of exercise done on the beach with great music is my favorite!!

 

What is your diet like?
I like to keep things simple and consistent with my diet. I do change things up from time to time but typical day of eating looks like this:

 

  • (8 am) protein pancake (made with eggs, cocoa powder, almond milk, protein powder, coconut oil and cinnamon) with a banana and coffee
  • (12 pm) tuna over a salad with a veggie burger
  • (3 pm) protein bar or my homemade protein muffins
  • (6 pm) chicken breast with broccoli and salad.
  • (9 pm) if I’m hungry, I’ll have a snack before bed such as peanut butter on a rice cake or green tea latte.
I drink a ton of water throughout the day too!!

 

What supplements do you take?
I like to keep things I put inside my body as natural and simple as possible, so I’m not a big supplement person. However, I do always keep a container of chocolate protein powder and I take a multi vitamin and a probiotic every day. Plus I drink apple cider vinegar after my meals to help with digestion. 

 

What is your top hack for following a healthy diet?
To plan ahead. Figure out your schedule, then plan your meals accordingly. For example, if you know you will be working all day, pack your healthy meals the night before. Food prepping doesn’t have to be so time consuming and overwhelming. Just cook a bunch of healthy food one night, then toss it containers. If you are always eating whatever is convenient or in front of you, it’s pretty much impossible to stick to a healthy diet and reach your goals. 
Here’s another hack. Throw away all the junk in your cupboards at home to avoid temptation.. If you can’t throw it away, then hide it!

 

What's your greatest exercise secret?
To workout first thing in the morning before you get distracted with everything else you have going on in your life. Make it part of your morning routine! 

 

What upcoming projects are you currently working on?
So many upcoming projects!! I have my website being launched soon that will include training programs, videos, inspiration and more! (I am working really hard on my fitness program that will be launching mid December, stay tuned!!) Plus, I am planning a meet up event here in Miami in early 2018. Lastly, I am an ambassador with Vestem (a high fashion fitness clothing line) and Godashdot (a gym bag company), so I’m always working on events and collaborations with them!
