A teenager ballerina, Misty Copeland grew up to become a well-known and respected ballet dancer. She has earned a name for herself among those in the dance community and has achieved many positive things throughout her life.

In 2000 she was named the ABT National Coca-Cola scholar while attending the American Ballet Theater on a scholarship. The same year, she joined the ABT Studio Company. In 2007 she was named the company’s soloist, and was only the second African American woman in the previous two decades to do so. 2015 brought with it a promotion that made Misty the company’s first principal African American dancer. She has received much praise for every stage show she has performed in and consistently gets glowing reviews from critics.

Before and since her promotion, Misty has danced in productions of The Nutcracker and Romeo & Juliet. She has also been on TV several times, with appearances on The Today Show and CBS Sunday Morning. Misty has endorsement deals with brands such as Coach, Under Armour, Diet Dr. Pepper and American Express.
With a passion for helping those in need, Misty is also known for her charity work. In 2014 she was appointed as a member of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. She also serves as a mentor to many young boys and girls in need.
In addition to her dancing career and her charity work, Misty has a published picture book as well as her own memoir. Furthermore, in 2014 she was awarded University of Hartford’s honorary doctorate, which she received, based on everything she has contributed to the ballet industry and the diversity she has brought into it.

Misty lives in New York City with her husband, Olu Evans. They have been together since Olu’s famous cousin, Taye Diggs, introduced them in 2004. The couple announced their engagement 11 years later and was wed the year after that. When she is not working, Misty is a very private person that lives a quiet life with her husband.
