If you’re a fan of gymnastics in general, or just like watching it every Olympic season, there is no way you’ve missed this name. She’s a two-time Olympian who helped captain the final five to victory just last year in Rio. While she’s in the news for other reasons these days, she’s had a great career so far, and will soon be entering a new world. First, let’s cover some basics.
Facts About Aly Raisman
Her bio and wiki say that she was inspired to get into the sport that has made her a household name as a toddler who took a mommy and me class. Video of the 1996 team, also known as the Magnificent Seven, further cemented her excitement for the sport, and a desire to be on that podium.
Gymnastics is in her blood because Aly was born to a former student gymnast. She worked hard while juggling school to begin competing. Her Junior career really got going in 2009, while she began competing as a Senior the following year. While her junior debut was average, she managed to walk away with a silver medal her first time competing at the Senior level.
She’s one of the few American gymnasts to earn a gold in two straight Olympics. In 2016, she spoke about feeling that she was in the best shape of her career as she captained the team to a win with a positive attitude and impressive routines. That year, she also won silver in both the All-Around and Floor Exercise and managed a Bronze for the Balance Beam. She’d also medaled in Floor during the 2012 Games.
In between these competitions, she’d also earned several World, Pacific Rim, and National medals. A fun fact? As of the 2016 Games, she was still using the same coach she’d had since she was twelve. Looks like there’s a lesson there: if it ain’t broke.
Aly Raisman Dancing with the Stars
There’s a lot to deal with when you’re an elite athlete. The pressure is obviously huge when you’re on a big stage and a favorite to do big things. There’s also all the press, training, and everyday stuff. One of the biggest, though, once you’ve reached that level might have very little to do with actual performance and training. It’s what to do after the competition is over.
Athletes who walk away with one of the big prizes are in high demand for shows, book deals, etc. Aly took advantage of several of these opportunities. She made it through ten weeks on Dancing with the Stars, and just released a book. Fierce tells the full story of her athletic and personal journey so far, and was released in November of 2017. She’s also a designer, having her own collection of gymnastics apparel with GK Elite.
Aly Raisman Book "Fierce"
Aly is using her fame and social media to send a message of body positivity and confidence to her followers, as well as to share her story as a victim of sexual abuse, which has landed her on shows like 60 Minutes. She’s determined to make a difference for other gymnasts and other victims.
Her book "Fierce: How Competing for Myself Changed Everything" covers Aly's perseverance, dedication, and how to think positive even in the toughest times. Raisman said, “The most important thing for girls, and for everyone in general, is you have to find your way to be confident in yourself."
