We all know that dry, cracked lips are never fun, especially during the winter season. What not everyone realizes is that there is a ridiculously easy way to exfoliate your lips. Forget using lip balm or other tried and true methods; one of the best ways to exfoliate your lips is to use nothing more than a Q-tip.
Lip Care Tips
You may be under the impression that Q-tips are too soft to get the job done but, surprisingly, you would be wrong. What most people don't realize is that the soft surface of the head of a Q-tip is the perfect material for exfoliating your lips without exfoliating them TOO much. Everyone knows over exfoliating can lead to raw, painful lips, but using this method prevents that from happening.
Another way you may not have thought of is to properly apply Vaseline to your lips. The best way to do this is to use the softest toothbrush you can find (preferably one made for a child) to rub the Vaseline gently across your lips. While the bristles of the toothbrush exfoliate your lips, the Vaseline will hydrate your lips and help them heal. However, if you don't have a toothbrush handy to use for this task, you can get the same effect by mixing coffee grounds or sugar into Vaseline and then spreading it on your lips with your fingers. If you leave a trace of Vaseline on your lips afterward, it will keep protecting them from chafing. In fact, one of the best ways to combat chapped lips is to apply Vaseline immediately before going to bed.
Home Remedies for Soft Lips
Vaseline is far from the only thing you can use to keep your lips healthy during the winter months. Another way to do it is to combine olive oil and brown sugar. Once mixed together a pasty cream will form. All you have to do is slowly and gently rub it on your lips for a minimum of three minutes. Rubbing your lips too long or too hard can actually make your chapped lips worse. When you have rubbed the mixture on your lips for the appropriate amount of time you will want to dry your lips and immediately apply petroleum jelly or lip balm to help retain the moisture in your lips.
Three other ingredients you can use to exfoliate your lips are lemon slices, sugar and honey. Dipping the edge of a slice of lemon into sugar and then rubbing it on your lips for a minute is the first step. The next step is to wash your lips using cold water and then apply honey to them. After five to eight minutes, you'll need to rinse off your lips and apply petrolem jelly to them. If you do this every 10 days throughout the winter, you should be able to completely avoid chapped lips.
