Well, with the holiday season just past us it’s time to start thinking about the next one just around the corner, Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day may be associated with romantic love but it is a great day for you to tell anyone in your life just how much you love them regardless of the relationship type. That being said, just how much do you know about this holiday and how can you give your loved on a gift that is unique and a true display of what you think of them?
But First a Short but Important History of Valentine’s Day..
This holiday has its roots in both ancient Roman and Christian traditions. Stories vary though but the most common one tale tells of its origin based in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalis/Lupercalia, a fertility celebration that used to be observed each year on February 15. As Christianity began to spread, many cultures’ holidays were incorporated into the Christian calendar, adapted, and renamed to suit the Christian ideals. In the year 496 AD, Pope Gelasius took the festival of Lupercalia turned it into a Christian feast day, moved to February 14, and was proclaimed to honor Saint Valentine, a 3rd century Roman martyr. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius turned Lupercalia into a Christian feast day and set its observance a day earlier, on February 14.
A Tradition Begins
Saint Valentine’s story has two different versions, one based on Catholic observance, the other on Protestant. While some of the details are different, the basic story for both is that Saint Valentine performed secret marriage ceremonies for soldiers as this ceremony had been banned by Claudius II. Claudius II caught wind of this and ordered Saint Valentine’s execution. The rest of the story varies considerably but Saint Valentine became formally associated with February 14 and the day of all lovers in the 14th century. This holiday has been observed in many countries around the world since that time and has gained popularity consistently since that time.
Saint Valentines Day Gifts
Now that we know where the holiday began we can begin to discuss Valentine’s Day gifts. While many choose to go for the standard flowers, chocolates, jewelry, and candy as gifts for Valentine’s Day, there are many other unique gift ideas should you want to do something which injects a little more of your personality into the mix. Many options exist for those who are crafty or artistic to create a one-of-a-kind present, but there are many great ideas for gifts which can be purchased.
Personalized gifts add a touch of something special to any gift. Having a fluffy bathrobe, undergarments, mug, or even household items personalized with a name and special message. This can take a somewhat ordinary gift to extraordinary and demonstrate that you really thought about the person when choosing the gift.
Some Special Ideas to Consider
One of the best gifts you can ever give is one which allows the receiver to hold a new and treasured memory close to their heart forever. That makes an experience the ultimate gift. The gift you choose can be lovely all on its own, but attention to how you plan out the giving of the gift can create the most memorable Valentine’s Day they’ve ever experienced. Whether you choose to cook your partner a special meal, take them out to their favorite restaurant, or have a romantic getaway, there are a lot of things you can do to make this something extra special. Some Ideas Include:
- Write down things you love about them and put it into a jar to open at a later date.
- Make them a heartfelt gift of mementos of your relationship
- Give them an IOU for anything they desire
- Give them a "Get out of Jail Free Card" on a piece of paper for any future arguments
Some other ideas could be creating a CD full of their favorite romantic songs, have a decorative and personalized label created for it, and offer it as a gift you will play at a point you have chosen throughout the course of the date you have planned. Have a message of love written and have it waiting on their place setting for when they are seated.
When you get back home, run your loved one a nice warm bath with a new and fabulous line of bath products you’ve just purchased, serve them their favorite beverage, and play that CD you’ve created to provide them an evening of relaxing bliss or to prepare them for a steamy night.
Another fun option is to purchase a few pieces of Valentine's Day Lingerie and prepare for the night of your lives. There is nothing wrong with acting a bit out of character during this time, you are supposed to show each other how much you truly appreciate and care for one another. Choosing a costume piece such as the Bunny Love Lingerie Set below is a good Valentine's Day Bikini, because it's something you wouldn't normally wear. It is also a thoughtful and affordable gift.
Finally, when choosing a gift for your loved one, be sure you’ve taken both your personality and theirs into consideration. Giving a gift which does not suit either one of you could leave a rather hollow feeling to the gift regardless of how nice it is and that’s really not what you are going for on this day of love.
